Ron Sands joins Tories from ED

Rochester & Strood Conservatives have welcomed the defection of Hoo Parish Councillor Ron Sands from the English Democrats.

Cllr Sands has been a strong campaigner for the English Democrats, particularly on the Hoo Peninsula, and stood in this year’s local elections in Peninsula ward, where he polled seventh, behind the Conservative and Labour candidates.

He also stood in both the River ward by-elections in August and October last year, and against Rochester & Strood MP Mark Reckless in last year’s general election.

However, after a messy situation in the English Democrats (detailed on Cllr Sands’ blog last month), he decided that the Conservative Party best represented his political viewpoint.

“It will be a pleasure to work within Rochester and Strood with such an able MP,” Cllr Sands said after joining. “Mark Reckless’ thoughts on Europe are the same as my own, and I think much of the country too.

“The local Conservative team are one of the most able group of Councillors I have met, and I can’t wait to work closely with Chris (Irvine), Tony (Watson) and Phil (Filmer) for the benefit of those within the Hoo Parish, and across the Hoo Peninsula and Medway as a whole.”

Mark Reckless, pictured presenting Cllr Sands with a Conservative rosette, added “I’m delighted that Ron has joined us. I have a great admiration for his campaigning abilities, and I know he will be a great champion for local residents.

“After the decision by UKIP not field a candidate in Rochester and Strood at the General Election, I am glad to see that the Conservatives are now also attracting supporters of other Parties.

“I know it was not an easy decision for Ron, but he now has the opportunity to reach out to a far greater audience for the good of our local community and our country. It’s great to have him onboard.”
